TIM’S DOO Skopje: Leading Sustainability in Hospitality

02.05.2025

Setting the scene: Who did you help and what were their needs?

TIM’S DOO Skopje is a Macedonian company, with over two decades of experience in the hospitality sector. Founded in 1999, the company established one of the first private hotels in the city. In 2020, the hotel underwent a complete renovation, emerging as a modern design hotel with a strong focus on sustainability and energy efficiency. Hotel TIM’S DOO Skopje provides a range of services, including accommodation, venues, and meals, catering to the needs of companies, travelers, and tourists, all while maintaining its focus on quality and customer experience. In line with its renewed vision, the company aimed to transition to a greener, more energy-efficient business model. Despite having a clear commitment to sustainability, including among others investment in photovoltaics (PV) as energy source, TIM’S DOO Skopje faced challenges in defining a structured path toward energy optimization. They lacked internal resources and expertise to develop a comprehensive sustainability action plan and needed guidance on identifying relevant funding opportunities to support their green transformation. Their first connection with the Enterprise Europe Network (EEN) came when Foundation for Management and Industrial Research, the EEN partner in North Macedonia, was actively promoting the EENergy call for applications. TIM’S DOO Skopje reached out as a potential applicant. After an initial meeting, Foundation for Management and Industrial Research began supporting the company by performing sustainability assessment and creating sustainability plan that was used as basis for the application under the EENergy call. During the process, Foundation for Management and Industrial Research collaborated with Cluster Mechatronics and Automation (CMA), EEN partner from Bulgaria involved in the EENergy consortium, to ensure the application was submitted correctly and to ensure proper service provisioning to the client.

Services provided: What did you do to help them?

Foundation for Management and Industrial Research’s sustainability advisor played a central role in supporting TIM’S DOO Skopje through their journey towards greater energy efficiency. The process began with a sustainability assessment, which allowed us to identify key areas for improvement in the company’s operations. From there, we worked closely with the team to develop a tailored sustainability action plan, outlining clear steps for energy optimization and more sustainable business practices. Once the action plan was in place, the sustainability advisor assisted TIM’S DOO Skopje with the EENergy call for applications. This included providing guidance on the documentation, navigating the application process, and ensuring that the submission met all the necessary criteria. Throughout the entire process, the advisor remained available to support the company, which culminated in TIM’S DOO Skopje being awarded the grant from the EENergy consortium. This grant will enable them to implement the actions outlined in their sustainability plan, leading to considerable  energy savings and a greener operational model.. CMA advisor provided guidance on the call process, as well as on the granting and reporting procedures, which ultimately helped ensure that TIM’S DOO Skopje was well-prepared and successful in securing and successfully implementing the grant.

The impact: What was the outcome of your help?

As a result of the support provided by the Foundation for Management and Industrial Research, TIM’S DOO Skopje successfully secured funding through the EENergy call, which will enable the company to implement its sustainability action plan. This includes key areas such as investment in new equipment, consultancy for energy consumption evaluation and energy efficiency procedures, and training to increase employee skills related to energy efficiency. With the grant, TIM’S DOO Skopje is positioned to achieve substantial energy savings, enhance energy efficiency, reduce operational costs, and adopt a greener operational model that will contribute to their long-term sustainability goals.

The company has invested in PV cleaning equipment and it is expected that this investment will result in a reduction in energy consumption by 5-15%, leading to an estimated cost savings of at least 5% annually. The overall reduction will be further supported with the newly introduced energy efficiency procedures. Additionaly, several employees were trained on energy efficiency practices, focusing on skills like energy consumption monitoring, implementation of sustainable practices, and operating energy-efficient systems. The training is expected to lead to increased awareness among staff, resulting in more effective daily operations and long-term energy savings.

These efforts are anticipated to position TIM’S DOO Skopje as a leader in sustainability within the hospitality sector, attracting more eco-conscious customers. Foundation for Management and Industrial Research is proud to have played a pivotal role in helping the company move closer to its sustainability goals. This success also opens the door for future collaborations with other companies in the hospitality and energy sectors, enabling us to continue fostering the growth of businesses dedicated to sustainability.
